CHAPTER ELEVEN

Twyla tossed and turned until midnight. Noah was sleeping in the next room. On her couch. He wasn’t naked, but he didn’t have to be. Thanks to a few glimpses and her active imagination, she almost knew what he looked like. Stupid imagination.

Despite what had to be scratches on his back, he’d simply gone to bed as if this was any other day. Now, she glanced in the living room and saw him curled up on the couch, an arm slung over his face. Carefully, she tiptoed close and pulled the blanket to cover him up to the neck. She could deal with a lot of things in life, but tonight she did not want to deal with noticing Noah’s naked, perfectly sculpted chest. It was practically a work of art. Not that she was all that familiar with said works of art, but she watched Netflix, after all. And, one day, a little bored at the store, she’d created an entire display she’d labeled, guys missing their shirts. Some of the best books she’d ever read. And, well, let’s just say that Noah could easily model for one of those covers.

She really needed to get her head screwed on straight. Slipping into the kitchen in the dark, she was careful not to wake Noah. What she really needed was a shot of whiskey to knock her out cold so she could endure this torturous night. But she could almost hear paramedic Noah’s voice in her ear: Um, no. Bad idea. Mixing alcohol with a concussion? Well, even she realized that could be risky. She went for the milk since she was probably the least exciting person on the planet. Milk was boring. She poured some into a cup and warmed it up in the microwave.

Funny new things to note? Noah didn’t even snore. And apparently, Bonkers didn’t hate him. He sat at the edge of the couch like a sentry, guarding Noah’s feet. Occasionally he took a swipe but always missed. Bonkers never missed. He didn’t hate Noah!

Right now, Twyla desperately needed to think of one thing that was very wrong with Noah. Just one thing, please, other than the fact that he hadn’t even let her attend to his cat scratches. That was irritating, sure, but it could be said he didn’t want to bother her. She was at a loss, other than his often unnerving need to rescue everyone. And she could be more irritated by that if she didn’t realize exactly what had caused it.

She turned and blinked when Noah’s chest appeared in her line of sight.

“Hey,” he said from under hooded lids. “I was just coming to wake you.”

She tried to ignore the way he rubbed his eye with the back of his palm. And suddenly, she had it. The one thing that irritated the hell out of her about Noah.

She pointed her finger at him. “That’s it! I have it now. Want to know what your problem is? You’re stealthy and sneaky. It’s no wonder Bonkers doesn’t hate you like he hates everyone else.
